Q&A - Gullivearth.com

What is Gullivearth.com?
Gullivearth is an interactive guide written by students who like to go out, to travel and enjoy studying abroad. Gullivearth is a dedicated tool to prepare your departure to a foreign country or your Erasmus exchange.

On Gullivearth you can find:
-    Information on daily life in universities
-    Students leaving or students who went in theses universities
-    Special offers, low cost flight tickets.

Everything about students’ life, all over the world.

What is Gullivearth for?
Gullivearth’s aim is to allow students to share information related with their university’s area, and this particularly when they are going to study abroad and they feel a little lost.

How does Gullivearth work?
All the information available on Gullivearth is based on feedback shared by students who write, update and correct practical guides.

The website is built on three different areas:
1)    Share: manage your profile, your friends, your mail, your contributions, and check out what your friends have experienced.
2)    Find: access all the information about universities, daily life abroad, bars and restaurants around universities, youth hotels and the most popular student associations.
3)    Book: cheapest flights online booking, nights in youth hotels … and more coming soon.

Where does the name Gullivearth come from?
It’s a play on words based on Jonathan Swift’s “Gulliver’s travels”, and on the name “Earth”. So basically, Gullivearth is the planet of mobile students.

Who can register on Gullivearth?
Everybody can register on Gullivearth. Gullivearth is aimed at students, but Internet users who like to travel, and who are looking for good deals are invited to register too.

What is the “Facebook Connect” link for?
Most of Gullivearth’s users have a Facebook account, in which they already detailed all  their personal and general information. Facebook Connect is a tool enabling the integration of this information on Gullivearth to save time during your registration process. You can send invitations to your Facebook friends to join Gullivearth through the second step of the registration process, or in the section Share > My friends > Add a friend that is not a Gullivearth member.

Why are you asking me in which university I’m studying?
To organize student networks on Gullivearth, it is necessary to be able to link each member to a university: it enables us to bring a better and more personalized information.

I’m not a student. Can I join Gullivearth?

Of course you can benefit from students’ feedback and special offers.

I’m not registered on Gullivearth. Can I buy flight tickets ?
Yes, non-registered users can buy as many flight tickets as they want on Gullivearth.com.

How can I invite friends to join Gullivearth?
You can invite friends to join Gullivearth using the Facebook, Gmail, Msn and Yahoo! Mail tools, available in the section Share > My friends > Add a friend that is not a Gullivearth member section. Do not hesitate to invite your friends, the more we will have members on Gullivearth, the better the information will get.

Is it possible to book for a flight for all of the members of my association?

The maximum number of tickets you can book at once on Gullivearth is limited to 6. This number is limited so we can provide the same price for the all group. After 6 tickets our partners cannot guarantee that enough seats will be available on the same flight.

What can I do on Gullivearth if I’m not a registered member?
Non registered users can benefit from Gullivearth’s offers. But being registered as a Gullivearth member enables you to join the community life: interact with the content and other members can be very useful.
Being registered is necessary to write or modify a guide, to post pictures; to write comments or chat with Gullivearth members.

Who’s writing Gullivearth’s guides?
All our guides are based on students feedbacks. Students can create and modify guides based on their own experience. The author’s name is written in the bottom of each page . If you see the name AdminGullivearth, it means that the guide has been created by our content management team based on multiple student sources.

Who can modify Gullivearth’s guides?
All members are encouraged to update, correct, post new pictures and add new information to existing guides. Click “modify” on the top right of the guide. On the edition page, process with the modifications , then click “valid”. The guide’s administrator will receive a modification request and if this modification is accepted it will be posted.

Who can create guides?
All members are encouraged to create new guides. Doing so, they will become administrators of their own guides and will accept or not the modification requests sent by other members.

What happens if something incorrect or outdated is written into a guide?
1)    click “modify” on the top right of the guide, correct, then send your modifications to the guide’s administrator by clicking “valid”.
2)    If the administrator does not accept your modifications, we invite you to click “report bad content” and explain why you have a problem with the guide’s administrator. We’ll do our best to solve any issue.

What happens if a guide seems totally pointless, not precise enough or written by someone that is trying to promote his own interests?
1)    Click “modify”, give new details and make the appropriate modifications
2)    If the content of a guide is of low quality, click “is this information accurate” link and give a grade below 2/5. Gullivearth’s team will take action to improve the quality of this guide.
3)    If the guide’s administrator obviously tries to promote his own interests; click “report bad content”. Gullivearth’s team will then take action to change the administrator or even delete the guide.

What happens if you see a guide that contains offensive or illegal content?

Click “report bad content” on top right of the guide, explain us what is wrong and Gullivearth’s team will take the appropriate action to remove the content.

How can you make sure that your guide will appear in the good section of the website?
Gullivearth contains thousands of guides and it is necessary to create your guide carefully if you want as many users to be able to find it in the right section. Pay attention to the creation process, to the title you use and to the area your guide is going to apply to. Indeed, sometimes a guide you write can only be relevant for a specific campus, a city or a whole country.

For example, you’re writing about accommodation in France. This guide can be relevant to someone looking for accommodation in Paris as well as Marseille: do not choose any specific city in the guide form, so the guide will appear in the entire France section.

Now you’re writing about accommodation in Paris. This guide is only going to be relevant to people looking for accommodation in Paris (prices, districts are specific to the city). In the creation form indicate a city (Paris) so your guide will not appear in the section of other French cities.

How do you deal with different languages on Gullivearth?
Three languages are available on Gullivearth: English, Chinese and French. Our goal is to open more languages soon. The website’s interface is going to be adapted to the language you have chosen in the registration process. If you are French or Chinese, you might prefer to use the interface written in your mother tongue. But sometimes, the content is only available in one language. You can choose to find this content in English by switching the interface (using the flags on top right of the site) so English guides get visible.

How do you deal with cultural diversity in Gullivearth’s guides?

Gullivearth is worldwide and sometimes guides written in a same language might not be relevant to all the different nationalities: for example a guide dealing with Visas problems for France. This matter is going to be different if students come from the US or from Ireland. When a guide is only relevant to a specific nationality or culture; please mention it in the title of your guide.

Why is not my university listed on Gullivearth yet?
We haven’t added your university to our database, so please notify this omission during the registration process by clicking on “not listed?” and then mention its name and country.

Who’s in charge of universities’ main page?

When you access to a university you get to a “university page” that presents the university. This page is under control of the university if it has an agreement with Gullivearth. If not, we’ve added a general description to introduce it but it can be changed if required by the said university.

How can you write a guide about your University?
It is possible to create guides or places related to your University (about almost everything you want: life on campus, best classes, student unions, most famous bars & restaurants on campus…). Within a university space, under the student guide or student places subcategories, click “create” and the form will be pre-filled with geographic details. Just write the appropriate title or name.

How can you figure out that a place X is related to University Y?
Every member is identified through his university of origin. Each time someone adds a place to his/her favorites we know how many students from university Y like to go to place X.

You’re looking for a university, a guide, a country, a place that does not already exist on Gullivearth?
Email us to contact@gullivearth.com and we’ll do our best to find what you are looking for!
