Student life in the Ottawa university
The campus of the Ottawa University is situated in the heart of the city and has several blocks which have their own specificities.
MBA students attend to their lessons in the Vanier block. At the first floor, there is a Starbucks and a lounge with armchair, printers and microwaves. There is also a computer center that the students can use for free. This computer center is open 7/7 and 24/24 provided that you come before 11p.m.
In the Morrisset block there is a library. With your student card, you can borrow books for 3 weeks for free. You can also buy a print card and use the printers.
In the University complex, students can do a lot of things. There is a book store where you can buy you school books. You will know which books are compulsory when you will go in the book store with the code of you lessons. You will also find several items with the Ottawa University's emblem. In this building, there is also a cafeteria and a caf where you can find sandwiches and hamburgers.
You will also find a travel agencie, a shop where you can buy glasses, an amusement arcade and an auditorium where you can watch recent films every two weeks for 3CA$.
At the 3rd floor you will find the International House, which regularly organize different activities (please refer to their newsletter). It is better to register yourself as soon as you arrive at the International House if you are interested.
Students can enjoy different bars and cafés in the campus of the University. The Second Cup is like a Starbucks and is situated near the Laurier residence hall. The Nostalgica is a little pleasant café run by students, it is located behind the library. You can eat, have a coffee or a glass of beer in the evening and attend to an ad-libind or a jazz concert. The Father and Son is a pub where exchange students like to meet each other. You can attend to karaoke parties on Wednesday evening and to 80's parties on Thursday evening.
There is a huge sports complex inside the Ottawa University, where there are lots of gyms, that students can use for free. Sports activities are divided between 2 blocks. The Montpetit complex is the nearest block from the residence hall. There are lots of sports students can practise there, since there are a swimming-pool, squash courts, a weight room, several basketball grounds, a dance hall and a martial arts room. The New Complex is a little farther and less crowded. There are big weights room, an ice rink, a gymnasium and open-air sport grounds. Students can take part to aerobics lessons, gymnastics lessons, dancing lessons or martial arts lessons for free.
The sport association of the Ottawa University organizes lots of sport activities with lots of excursions which are worth-going: rafting in Quebec, exploring caves, hiking in High Peaks... These excursions are quite expensive but students generally get lots of good memories.
The main tourist attraction in Ottawa is the Leamy Lake's casino. Students can go there alone (the fare costs 15CA$ in taxi) or attend to the university's excursions heading to the Casino which costs 10CA$. The Ottawa University organizes the transport to the casino and gives the students a 10CA$ voucher to use during the very evening and another 10CA$ voucher to use afterwards.
