Housing :
Finding a flat at York University The University of York has student lodging in the campus for exchange students. Living in this kind of housing is god because you avoid long trips between the campus and the town center ; these trips take between 1h and 1h30. Student lodgings in the campus are in 17-floor buildings. Exchange students live in the Assiniboine building. The housing are quite spacious and composed of a room with furniture, a bathroom and a kitchen. Students can use the washing machines at the first floor. There are no cookware, no sheets, no towel. Students can buy cheap ones at Dollorama in Yorkgate Mall, which is situated at the corner of Jane and Finch (it takes 15mn to go there by bus). Living in a lodging in the Assiniboine building costs 680CA$/month. You can get a connection to the Internet for 28CA$/month, but there will not be any connection when you arrive. You need to ask York Telecom, which is situated at the Steacie Lab, to set up your line. It will take 48 hours. You can also ask them to open a phone line for you or to install cable TV in.
Contact the Housing Office of the York University for any problem in your lodging. If you accept to move in the residence hall, you will have to make a transfer to pay a one-month rental deposit. You need to make a notice 60 days before leaving your lodging and 2 days before as far as Internet or telephone are concerned.
There is a bus station near the residence hall of the York University.
At your arrival in Toronto, you will have to go to the Housing Office between 8a.m. and 7p.m. to get the keys of your lodging. The Housing Office is in the building n°340 in Assiboine Road. But if you do not arrive within the opening time, there are solutions. You can ask a student in the premises to collect your keys or ask the Housing Housing to put them in a small locker in the hall of the building and to tell you the code of the locker.
If you would rather live in the town center, remember that a rent overthere is from 100CA$ to 200CA$ more expensive than a rent in the residence hall. Moreover, it is difficult to find a lodging in the town center since the real estate agencies are very strict and do not let you rent a lodging if you stay less than one year. Single studio scarcely have furniture. If you only stay one semester in Toronto, it is more profitable and easier to find co-tenants to share an apartment.
