Finding a flat in Montreal
The University of Concordia does not offer any student accomodation inside the campus. When arrivving in Montréal, you can book a room in a youth hostel as long as you are looking for an accomodation outside the campus. There are different kinds of housing: furnished appartments or house-sharing. There are lots of housing offers in Montréal, especially house-sharing offers, which give you the opportunity to make bonds with Canadian students.
There are different website which can help you finding an accomodation in Montréal: www.montreal.craiglist.ca and http://ca.easyroommate.com/ .Both are free of use. You can also read the free newspaper "Voir" which is edited every Thursday and broadcast in bars, restaurants and subway stations. You can also read the adverts posted up on the walls of the Concordia University, especially at the 6th floor of the Building Hall. The Housing Office of the Concordia University collect housing offers and broadcast them to students.
Students of Concordia University try to get a housing near the campus since waiting for the public transports when it is -25°C can seem very long and cold. The most lively district in Montréal is the Plateau, which is also very European-like. The Mile-End district is more residential. It is important to run a simulation of you eventual daily trip on the website http://www.stm.info/English/a-somm.htm and to check how frequently buses and subways come.
If you want a furnished apartment with a wireless connection to the Internet, allow between 500CA$ and 900CA$ for the monthly rent. It is more expensive than sharing an apartment. You can see furnished apartment offers in http://www.studiomeublemontreal.com/ or in http://www.studiosquartierlatin.com/ if you want an apartment in the Latin quarter (both websites are of course available in English).
If you want to have a cheaper rent and live a little farther from the town center, try to find a housing along the green subway line heading directly to Concordia University. Living outside of the towncenter can be a problem if you want to go out since the subway closes at midnight and a half during the week and 1.30a.m. during the week-ends. There are night buses coming generally once or twice an hour.
The inhabitants of Montreal generally do not suscribe any rental agreement or realise any inventory and report on state of repair. Still, you can ask your landlord/lady to make these documents if you want to avoid any problems afterwards.
